Luna Community College
There are several reasons why people go to college. One of the many reasons includes opening up new opportunities for the future, creating new connections, and meeting interesting people. But most of the best colleges are either hard to access or not affordable for most people. Luckily, there are several other smaller community colleges in each state that can help their students with the resources needed for higher education. One of the best of these schools includes Luna Community College.
Luna Community College, also known as LCC, is a community college in northeastern New Mexico. The school is the only community college located in that region. LCC‘s main campus is found along the lower slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. Aside from the main campus, LCC also hosts satellite centers in Mora, Springer and Santa Rosa, all of which are in New Mexico. The college gets its name from Maximiliano Luna, known as the Speaker of the House of Representatives for New Mexico in 1899. Luna was also known as a Captain of the Rough Riders, and a 1st Lieutenant of the 34th U.S. Volunteer Infantry.
The school was first established in 1967, when the Act of the Legislature of the State of New Mexico decided to open up new schools near Las Vegas, New Mexico. Then in 1969, Luna Community College was founded as the Luna Area Vocational Technical School. Then in 1970, there was a levy election held to help fund the school, which was then renamed as the Luna Vocational Technical Institute. In 1987, the school paid a final tribute to Captain Luna on the school’s campus. LCC erected a memorial stone monument of Luna on the front of the school’s Technologies Building. The monument faces the school campus and the previous training grounds of the New Mexico National Guard and its new recruits.
Then in 2000, the Board of Directors of LCC approved the adoption of the current name, and the school officially changed its name to Luna Community College. The name change was also to indicate that the college had shifted into a comprehensive community college. Among the many programs that are continued to be offered in LCC includes a range of courses and majors including vocational, technical, and professional education programs.
